Hey Brian!

2013 has been a fast-paced year for all of us, and after an exciting LDI week, we know many of you will be adding some goodies to your Christmas list. While you do that, think about how you can use Pure Lighting Excitement to help market your holiday parties and create something exciting for your clients. A great source of income is to call your clients a week or two before their event and talk about last-minute upsells that will enhance their evening.

With Christmas coming up, you can easily run wild with ideas that will excite your client about their event’s potential with just a touch of lighting. Let’s take a look at the possibilities; close your eyes, (or don’t, then you won’t be able to read this) and imagine the following: You walk into the banquet hall and instantly feel the Christmas cheer as holiday music fills the room, it’s a good selection, that’s why you’re the DJ. The entire area is transformed by a festive array of uplighting slowly fading from green to blue. There’s quite a bit of doors around the room, but with the WiFly series, that’s no problem. The tables are lit in festive colors using the Mega Go Par series, with the centerpieces lit up thanks to the FX Beam pinspots.

Of course custom holiday Gobos are projected on the walls with the Ikon LED. All this amazing lighting technology, taking one 20A circuit, transformed the room like never before. You give yourself a pat on the back as you plug in the final dazzling effect: dance floor lighting. Today, you chose the Mega Tri38 System since its BRIGHT and vibrant colors from such a portable fixture will bring attention to the dance floor without bringing attention to the equipment. Once plugged in, you decide you want a bit wider of a wash, so you velcro on some LSF filters and now the entire room, and then some, is flooded.

Perfecto. Your client walks in, stunned at the work you’ve done. "You are a lighting genius” they exclaim, and boy, do you feel good. You tell her to stand in the middle of the floor as you plug in the last special effect: a snow machine. Your client squeals with delight. Perfecto.

What’s fun about the scenario I gave you above is that you can take all those elements or just use some of them to create some great last minute upsells. One of my favorites is using MyDMX 2.0 and the Royal 3D Mark II to have the blue lasers perfectly still, simulating stars, while using an Ikon LED to project a moon gobo on the side of the wall. If you want to add on to that, you can use an LED H2O Pro to create slow-moving clouds.

The best part about last-minute upsells is the unexpected income. It also allows you to get new photos of your work to help your 2014 marketing hit the ground with its feet running. As you call your clients to talk about upsells, don’t be short and say “we have uplights, want some?” Paint them a visual of what the upsell is and why they’re important to the event. Retail history teaches us that people LOVE bundles, so don’t be afraid to create packages with multiple lighting choices. Why choose uplighting AND a gobo with you can have both?

So deck those halls with lighting jolly!
